Sorry, about the hiatus, but I hope this post is worth it. Better late than ever, they always say. Anyway, I am sort of rushing this, because I'm SO excited. Why? Because it has officially been announced that Don Bluth's long awaited feature film adaptation of his video game, Dragon's Lair will finally be officially released worldwide on May 1, 2020. The film will be distributed by 20th Century Fox in North America and Universal Pictures in foreign territories.
It will be animated in the classic style of traditional hand-drawn animation, just like Don Bluth's other films. Don Bluth is one of my favorite movie directors of all time. He has made 11 films, all of them I seen as a kid and enjoyed some of them, like The Secret of Nimh, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, Thumbelina and Anastasia. His 12th feature film overall, it's his comeback to animated films, after a 20-year long hiatus since the box-office failure of Titan A.E., released in 2000.
The premise of the movie is not too far off from the game, in which it's based on. It follows the adventures of Dirk the Daring and his relationship with Princess Daphne, that lead up to her rescue from the game.
According to IMDb, The movie's pitch to executives was funded by an online Indiegogo campaign. After a failed Kickstarter, it surpassed its initial $250K goal and made over $600K.
I know, we're still in the 2019 summer movie season, but I will say that this could possibly be my most anticipated movie of 2020, along with Disney's upcoming live action remake of Mulan and Jason Reitman's Ghostbusters 2020. It is unknown if the movie will be converted to and released in 3D, but I hope, it's worth the wait.
